Intro to Packrafting: Knik Glacier Tour
This is a classic Alaskan tour and great for those who want to learn more about hiking and packrafting in Alaska. Hiking and paddling are two activities that go well together with the use of ingenuitive packrafts. Our hiking route will follow the braided Knik River up to the glacier. On our hike we will have an open view of the mountains that surround this valley. The microclimate of this valley is unique in that it sits in what is called a rain shadow, meaning, a small amount of precipitation falls here. This means it is not uncommon to have clear skies and great views for photography and observing the mountain landscapes. It is common to see Moose, Black bears, Dall Sheep. The braided river provides us with a natural route getting to the glacier that will include low level river crossings and very little bushwhacking. Braided rivers are often preferred features for hiking and trekking off trail in Alaska because of their open views and relatively flat and terrain. Do keep in mind the route is not a maintained trail and we will be walking over river rocks so proper footwear is required.
Packrafts are incredible boats that are great for both floating flat water and paddling white water. They are small and packable for the hiking portion of the trip and you will receive instruction on how to assemble and maneuver your boat as we float around the lake. You will receive your backpack and packraft package upon arrival to Knik Glacier Tours where our trip will start. Safety is our first priority and you will be given a safety talk with rules for safely observing the ice and paddling the river. The river is rated beginner, Class I/II.
This trip will be offered throughout the summer and has many different variations to accommodate you. Please contact us for availability and pricing. This trip can be customized according to you and your group.
